I rubbed my stomach, trying to quieten it down. It ignored me and grumbled hungrily for the second time.

“It can’t be that late,” I said, glancing at the clock. Two p.m. “Oh, yeah, I guess it can.”

Standing and arching to stretch my lower back, it occurred to me I hadn’t moved from my chair in five hours. Definitely not good for my posture staying hunched over a computer for that long.

And where were the guys? It was unusual for them to leave me alone at all, much less for this long.

I hope nothing’s wrong.

Leaving the office, glad to be out and about once again, I trotted down the stairs.

Where were they?

The place was quiet today, but I suppose that shouldn’t be a surprise. Fridge had said that most of the men who worked here were contractors, so they probably only came in when they absolutely had to. Otherwise, they would be out chasing down bad guys.

“Hey, beautiful girl,” Rogan said as he glided up to me with a massive grin.

“Hey.” I smiled at him, struggling to squash the impulse to throw my arms around his neck and squeeze him tightly. I ached to kiss his lips and moan at the heat that would flood my belly. It always did.

“We gonna do lunch?” I asked.

Rogan nodded, grinning as though he knew my secret urges. “Sure. I was trying to wait until Fridge got back to come up and get you, cos I can’t really leave the place open and unattended.”

“Fridge left? Why?”

As though my words had called forth the man I spoke of, the front doors opened and my big, strong dragon shifter all but fell into the Workshop.

He was bleeding.

“Fridge!” I ran for my mate, getting beneath one of his arms as he stumbled forward.

Rogan called out for help and I groaned as Fridge’s weight partially dropped on me. Damn, he was heavy. Carrying him wasn’t possible, but I wasn’t letting go. He wasn’t going to hit the floor. I planted my feet and braced my back, my thighs burning with the struggle.

Then his weight was suddenly eased up as Rogan and two other huge men lifted Fridge and carried him down a passageway to the right of the stairs.

Following them, I wiped the sweat from my brow and found myself standing inside a mini-medical room. I hadn’t seen this room before.

“We have a first aid room?” I asked, rather stupidly, as Fridge groaned and rolled around on the examination table in obvious pain.

Rogan was barking out orders and ripping Fridge’s clothes from his body.

“What happened to him?” I asked, feeling numb with shock and somewhat helpless.

“He’s been bitten,” Rogan snapped back, grabbing some sort of bottle full of silver fluid from the first aid shelves and pouring it over Fridge’s neck, shoulders and upper body.

My mouth fell open as Fridge flailed around under Rogan’s ministrations.

“Bitten? By what?”

Or who?

And what the hell was that silver stuff?

My heart pounded hard as panic pulsed through me. Fridge couldn’t die on me. Not now.
